Scotland Tour Packing List
August 2026 | Highlands β’ Skye
One of the biggest surprises about Scotland is this: You are not packing for temperature β you are packing for wind and moisture.
You may experience sunshine, mist, cool air, and breeze all in the same afternoon. The secret to being comfortable is layers, not outfit changes.
The good news: you truly only need a carry-on suitcase and a backpack. No one in Scotland wears a different outfit every day β and neither will you π
If everything is laid out on your bed and does not fit comfortably into a carry-on, please remove half of it. Scotland is casual, and repeating outfits is completely normal.
Typical August Weather
Expect:
- Highs: 60β70Β°F (15β21Β°C)
- Lows: 50β55Β°F (10β13Β°C)
Luggage Limit
Due to limited space in our vehicles, please pack:
- 1 carry-on suitcase
- 1 personal item (backpack, tote, or purse)
- Optional: Foldable duffel bag packed inside your luggage for souvenirs to check on the way home
Please do not bring large checked luggage unless previously approved.
The Everyday Outfit Formula
Most days you'll wear some version of:
T-shirt or lightweight top β optional sweater or fleece β waterproof jacket
Scottish weather can change quickly, so layers are far more useful than heavy clothing. You may start the morning in a jacket, remove it by lunch, and put it back on by evening.
Even during warm weather, a waterproof outer layer is strongly recommended.
Outerwear
Most important: A rain jacket is the single most important item you will bring. Wear it on the plane to save space.
Scottish weather changes quicklyβeven in August.
- Waterproof rain jacket with hood
Tip: Do NOT rely on umbrellas alone.
Tops (5β7 total)
- 4β5 lightweight short-sleeve shirts/tops
- 1 comfortable lounge T-shirt
- 1β2 light long-sleeve shirts
- 1β2 lightweight sweaters, pullovers, or fleeces
Tip: Quick-dry or merino fabrics are especially nice.
Bottoms (about 4 total)
- Jeans or comfortable walking/hiking pants
- Comfortable leggings, joggers, or lounge/travel pants
- One nicer outfit option
- 1 pair of shorts (optional)
Note: You will repeat these β completely normal in Scotland.
- Waterproof walking shoes or boots, highly recommended. Wear them on travel day β these are your main shoes.
- Comfortable walking sneakers IF you can fit them comfortably in your bag
- Wedding shoes
Many sites have uneven paths, gravel, grass, mud, or wet stone.
Tip: If shoes are not waterproof, your trip becomes a wet sock trip.
Note: If purchasing new footwear, please wear them before the trip to ensure they are comfortable and broken in.
- 6β7 pairs of underwear
- 5β7 pairs of socks. I usually pack extras even with waterproof shoes because Iβm paranoid. Keep an extra pair in your daypack.
Tip: Merino wool hiking or walking socks are highly recommended, even in summer. They help regulate temperature, reduce odor, and remain comfortable when damp. Avoid cotton socks if possible.
Recommended: Merino Wool Socks
- Hat
- Sunglasses (surprisingly needed)
- Swimsuit (if youβre adventurous)
- Insect repellent (recommended)
Highland midges can occasionally be present during summer, especially on Skye, near water, and at dawn or dusk. A small bottle of insect repellent is recommended for outdoor stops and the wedding at Achmelvich Bay. Avon Skin So Soft works well if you can find or make a travel-friendly size.
If you'd prefer to wait until arriving in Scotland, Smidge is widely available and specifically designed for Scottish midges.
- Travel umbrella β not essential but can come in handy
- Foldable duffle or tote for souvenirs
- Medications (original containers for prescriptions)
- Solid toiletries if possible for easy travel β Solid Shampoo and Conditioner Bars
- Motion sickness tablets for island roads β Dramamine or Boiron
- Blister Band-Aids, essential in Scotland β Waterproof blister bandages
- Travel laundry soap, very helpful mid-trip β Laundry Sheets or Sink Suds liquid laundry detergent. Iβve used both, and both can be packed in a carry-on.
- Hair ties (wind destroys hairstyles immediately)
- Hotels may or may not have washcloths. I use these: Travel compressed washcloth
- Vacuum travel bags, extremely helpful for saving space: Vacbird
Hair, Makeup & Getting Ready
- Makeup and skincare as desired
- Hairbrush or comb
- Hair ties, clips, bobby pins, claw clips, headbands, etc.
- Any preferred styling products
- Heat protectant if using hot tools
- Travel mirror
- Travel-size hairspray or texturizing spray
Hair Tools & Voltage Reminder
Scotland uses Type G outlets and 230V electricity, which is different from the US.
If you plan to bring a hair dryer, curling iron or wand, straightener or flat iron, or hot brush, please check whether it is dual voltage before travel.
- 100β240V = usually okay with a UK plug adapter
- 120V only = do not plug it in with only an adapter
A standard plug adapter changes the shape of the plug, not the voltage. If your tool is not dual voltage, it may not work properly and could be damaged.
My recommendation: If your hair tool is not clearly labeled 100β240V, either leave it at home or purchase a dual-voltage travel version if itβs important to you:
- Dual-voltage curling iron
- Dual-voltage straightener (and curler)
- Dual-voltage hot brush
- Dual-voltage hair dryer
Most hotels provide a hair dryer, but if you rely on a specific styling tool, please check it before packing.
Beach + Highland wind are not kind to elaborate hairstyles. If youβre attending the wedding, consider bringing clips, pins, hairspray, or another way to secure your hair if needed.
Bring a small backpack every day β youβll use it constantly. If you are in a couple, one daypack should be plenty. It is also helpful if you buy something.
- Reusable water bottle β no, you donβt need a new one if you already have one, but these are the brands I like, and all are leakproof. I suggest less than 32 oz so you arenβt lugging a huge amount of water around.
- Medications (prescriptions in their original containers if possible)
- Lip balm
- Tissues
- Sunglasses
- Portable battery pack
- Phone charging cable
- Mini sunscreen β Badger Sunscreen or Thinksport
- Small bag for trash
- Dry bag or zip-top bags for electronics or wet clothes
- Passport and wallet
- Foldable tote bag
- Insect repellent
- Bandages, especially blister bandages
- Hair ties, pins, etc.
I plan to have some of these things available in the van, but please do not rely on that π
- UK outlet adapter (Type G)
- Phone charging cable
- Portable battery bank
- Camera (optional)
- AirPods or headphones
